You know how it feels when you have like a million browser tabs open, trying to make sense of stuff from all over the place?
That’s the exact reason why you’re here, right?
You’ve had enough of that mess!
The surprising thing is, now we have AI tools you may already know, but they have changed a lot, as they’ve gotten so much better since ChatGPT first came out back in November 2022.
In this post, you’ll find out about three AI deep research tools (and why they’re called *deep research) that have honestly saved my bacon many times and how they’ve changed the way we work.
So, keep reading!
What is an AI Deep Research Tool?
Think of an AI Deep Research Tool as having an agent do all the hard work of searching the web for you, so you don’t have to spend hours doing it yourself.
Instead of just giving you a bunch of links like Google does and a generic answer from ChatGPT, the AI tool actually reads through everything it finds and puts together a nice, organized report for you.
Here’s how OpenAI introduced deep research in practice:
In other words, we can say they are like detectives, as they search all over the internet on their own to find useful information about whatever you are interested in.
Then, they carefully think through everything they find, analyze the connections, and make sure it all makes sense and fits together.
And finally, they organize everything.
They take all that information and put it together in a way that is easy to understand, complete with all the sources.
For example, let’s say you’re researching the impact of social media on mental health. If you just search online, you’ll end up with way too many articles to read through, which can be really overwhelming.
But an AI deep research tool would:
- Actively browses through academic papers, news articles, and studies
- Breaks down the topic into key elements and builds its answers iteratively
- Shows its work through a visible chain of thought
- Presents you with a structured report, complete with citations
This means you can get your work done much faster without having to jump between dozens of browser tabs or spend hours searching and organizing information.
This is especially helpful when you’re working on complex topics in areas like finance, science, and engineering, where you need to be really thorough and accurate.
Even in our day-to-day lives, if you’re trying to buy something big, like a car or a house, these tools can really help you sort through all the details and make a smarter choice.
1. ChatGPT
The first one is ChatGPT. I know everyone talks about it, and you already know how it works. I’m also a daily user of it for many tasks whenever I need a helping hand.
We just ask questions, and we get answers almost instantly.
Unlike that regular search that gives you quick answers, ChatGPT’s deep research feature actually takes its time to dig through lots of different sources and put together a really thorough answer.

The best part is that you can show ChatGPT images, share files, or even spreadsheets to help it understand what you’re asking about better.
With every output, you can see exactly where all the information comes from, since it lists all its sources, which means you can check that everything is true and use it in your own work.
Sometimes, this can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, depending on how tricky your question is.
Even though ChatGPT does its best to give you good information, it can sometimes still make mistakes or get confused, kind of like how we all do sometimes.
That’s why it’s a good idea to double-check important facts using trusted websites or books, just to be on the safe side.
Pricing: You can get deep research if you have a ChatGPT Pro account, which costs $200 per month. Yes, you read it right. However, since February 25, 2025, everyone with a paid plan can do deep research but with some limited queries.
2. Perplexity AI
The next one is Perplexity, and this one’s interesting. You know how sometimes you’re not sure if what you’re reading is actually legit? That’s where Perplexity is really good.
I actually used this many times before the ChatGPT search came out. And now, I mostly use ChatGPT for quick searches.
But if you’re not a fan of the $200 ChatGPT Pro plan for its deep research capabilities, Perplexity might be the one you should try, as there is a reason for that.
What makes it really special is it looks through lots of sources, reads everything carefully, and figures out what to look into next, just like ChatGPT Deep Research does.

When it’s done, it puts everything together in a way that’s easy to understand. And the most interesting part is, you can save all this research as a PDF or document, or turn it into what they call a Perplexity Page to share with your friends or coworkers.
Pricing: If you want to use it a lot, you’ll need to get a Pro account, which is just $20, and that lets you do as many searches as you want. If you’re using the free version, you’ll only get a few searches each day. Right now, you can use it on their website, and they’re working on making it available to more devices.
3. Grok
Let’s talk about Grok. It’s like, imagine if your research assistant was also closely integrated with a social media platform, that’s Grok. And that social media platform is X (formerly Twitter).
What makes it special is how good it is at handling real-time information on X and the Deep Search features, which perform advanced search and reasoning.

So, the real strength here is how it handles current events and trending topics. Like, last week I was researching something that had just happened, and while other tools were still catching up, Grok was already on it.
I should also mention that Grok has gotten really good at handling things like math problems, science questions, and coding tasks with its latest update.
In fact, it’s doing so well that it’s now outperforming other AI tools, even ChatGPT, which is pretty impressive!
Pricing: Grok has a free version with basic features. For $30 per month, you can get SuperGrok which gives you three times more usage. You can also access Grok if you have an X Premium+ subscription, which includes extra features on X.
Picking the Right Tool (Without Losing Your Mind)
Let me be honest with you, these tools are helpful, and they’re just like any other tool we use.
I found out (the hard way!) that it’s much better to really learn how to use one or two tools well instead of trying to juggle all of them at once.
I usually keep it simple, starting with Perplexity when I need to check facts and do some basic research.
Then, I jump over to ChatGPT when I need help organizing all my ideas. Sometimes, I also use Grok when I want to see what’s happening right now or just get a fresh take on things.
Most of the time, ChatGPT is easy to use, and it is overall good at what it does.
But the best way of using them is probably going to be different for everyone, as it took me a while to figure out my workflow.
As long as it works for you, that’s what matters!
Wrapping Up
It’s amazing to see how these AI tools keep getting smarter and better at helping us find information. When I look back at how we used to do research, I can’t help but smile at how much easier things are now.
But they’ve also made us think harder about how we check if something is true and what it really means to do research nowadays.
So I think it’s fair to say, even these smart AI tools can make mistakes sometimes.
Meaning, it is always a good idea to double-check important facts and try different tools until you find the ones that feel right for you.
After all, we’re all learning here!
